CODEPINK: Knitivism for Peace & Mother's Day

Short notice on this, but it's still doable!

Copied from the CODEPINK website:
--------------------

A Radical Act of Knitting in honor of Mother's Day!

Calling all CODEPINK knitters! We are creating a beautiful, quilted cozy to cover the fence in front of the White House to honor Mother's Day. The message will be “We will not raise our children to kill another mother’s child”-inspired by Julia Ward Howe’s Mother’s Day Proclamation. We’ll be piecing it together from individual squares knitted by YOU as part of the 24 hour Mother’s Day vigil for Women who live in War Zones. The best part is you don’t have to be an experienced knitter to help! This is perfect for knitters of all skill levels—and a great opportunity for those who want to learn! Celebrate the time honored tradition of the radical act of knitting. How-to-knit page here (just in case!)

----------------------------
Go to the site for all the details. Basically they just want 4X4 tightly knit or crocheted squares, pink and green (a ratio of about 5:1.)

They need them by next Monday, May 4, so they probably need to be mailed by Thursday, maybe Friday. It's doable! I pledged 6 squares a couple of hours ago and am almost finished with my third.
I've already received acknowledgment of my pledge note, too - CODEPINK women rock!

Peace,
'Zann

  1. What do we do when another mother's child kills our children? What do we do when another mother's child swears to kill as many of our people as he (or she) can? When is it right that we stand up against another mother's child and stop him (or her) from killing us at random? How do we stop another mother's child from the violence and hatred that has been taught to that child from birth? Do we talk to that child? Do we give in to that child and give that child everything that he (or she) demands? At what point do we give up our freedom to have peace with another mother's child? What is the price to live in peace with another mother's child that has sworn death to us?

  2. Good questions that deserve thoughtful answers and dialogue which are not really possible in the comments section of a blog. But I'll just respond with some thoughts of my own.

I do question whether this country has ever truly been a country of peace and I'd love to know what this anonymous commenter believes is to 'live in peace.' To truly live peaceful, non-violent ideals. We are a country that imprisons more than 2 million, continues to insist the death penalty "works" and sees more than 30,000 die from guns every year. That's right here and we're doing it to ourselves.

Looking at our acts overseas in recent years: committing torture and the invasion and occupation of a country that did NOT have anything to do with the attack of 09.11.01, I'd say that those who have 'sworn death' to us have already achieved some of their goals, eroded our freedoms and made our claims to higher ideals sound hollow indeed.
